Design in the era of Obama: 5 tips for YOUR home
Dear friends of furbish:
What does design in the era of Obama look like? Back in the early 1990's my designer mother was interviewed about what directions in design were ushered in with the Clinton's. After last night's address I felt it was appropriate to send out my first musings about what directions design is taking with this new, exciting first family. Here are 5 fun tips to bring your home into a new era!
Go for classic and worldly simultaneously: The Obama's have an old world charm about the way they carry themselves, a general graciousness of demeanor. At the same time they are hip! And they signify an awareness that we live in a global era. Classic lines in furniture coupled with the occasional global accent and contemporary art should give a feel that embraces traditional and worldly all-together.
Add some depth and vibrancy with unusual color: Obama is an introspective soul. In his books he tackles the big issues, at both a personal and global level. Deep purples, maroons, and aubergines, and darker blue shades all inspire a more introspective, philosophical mode of thinking. The first lady has embraced vibrant saturated color in unusual shades that denote new directions and perspectives. Think about the shade of her inauguration dress and the dress shown here.
Dedicate a wall to your library: Educated, erudite, articulate. Such qualities come from being a book worm. Invest in yourself by reading more. Knowledge is the only thing that can't be taken from you. Set aside space in your home and start collecting a reference library for your life.
Go eco-friendly on some items: The environment matters! Make a conscious choice to use eco-friendly paints, flooring, building materials and furnishings. You can get organic fabrics, soy-based seat cushions in your sofas. You are no longer restricted to a particular look for eco choices, plus follow the next guideline for the easiest eco choice there is.
Invest in things that last: The Obama administration is about rebuilding a strong foundation. Do the same for your interiors. Decide who you are and then buy key pieces in the best quality you can to reflect that, at a pace that works for you.
