Color, Pattern, Texture: July 1

There are 2 things I do first when I start working on a new design project. I develop a scheme with fabrics and other surface materials, and I develop a floor plan. But because the fabrics and materials are so FUN, I will often do that first to inspire me with the rest of the project

That is why I have chosen to do my COLOR, PATTERN, and TEXTURE course first in my series of summer design seminars. Selecting the right colors, patterns, textures, and other materials for your home is the #1 way to create a truly beautiful environment in your home. Once you get this right, the rest of the details will often fall right into place, because it is so much easier to edit what will and won't have the right impact in you home.

What makes for a current, fresh feeling color scheme today. This is a brief overview of the evolution of color in interiors and the top 5 trends that define home color schemes today.

How to build a great fabric scheme. Here you will get the 3 elements I incorporate in ALL of my fabric schemes because it works so well to create looks that are interesting, adaptable, and nuanced.

How to put together a scheme of surfaces. Kitchens and baths are places where you have to carefully select surfaces for sure, but you also need to pay attention to surfaces and hard material choices in every room in your house. Learn what you need to consider before picking up a side table, lighting fixture, or accessories for your home. Plus get my easy guidelines for picking really great wood finishes.

How to start with pieces and elements you ALREADY have at home. There is an art to taking existing elements in your home and updating them. It is about combining things in new unexpected ways, and I'll show you how.

How to pick paint colors. Many people do this first when they move into a new home, but it works out best if you can do it after you have considered the other elements of your design. You’ll get pointers on approaching this tough question either way.
