4 tips for selecting seating

Dear friends,

Hopefully you have heard about our FREE side table with custom sofa offer. Many of you have been telling me how much you love the table styles we have selected for you to choose from. That is great! Please remember that the side tables are in-store at FURBISH now, where you can see them in person, along with our sofas.

I am writing because I wanted to be sure you saw my tips for selecting seating for your home. They are on our website, but I am including them below too. You can apply these to any sofa or chair purchase you make:

Know thyself, thy room, and thy family. What will you use this furniture for? If it is a reading chair be sure you pick a style with arms that are low enough and big enough to support your elbows when you read. Higher arms are more comfortable if you sit upright on a sofa. Lower arms are better if you like to lie down. How many people will you need to sit comfortably? Also know the dimensions of your room so you can assess sizes confidently.

KISS with fabrics. Keep it simple sweetie! Some people have very defined design styles and directions. Be sure this is you if you go for a printed fabric or bright color on your upholstered seating. Otherwise stick with solids and textures in the beautiful neutrals available today on your major upholstered pieces. A good sofa will last for many years so you want to be able to take it in different directions over time. I love the look and flexibility of coordinated solids and textures on sofas and chairs. If I do texture on one piece then I will most likely do a flatter fabric on another. Velvety fabrics are luxurious and current, and comfortable to rest your cheek on. Some textures can be better for chairs where you will be sitting upright because many of them will not be as soft.

Pay attention to detail. It is the small things that will make your sofa seem richer, higher quality, and more individualized. Contrast welting, small nailheads, tufting, beautiful pillows and fabrics, striking lines, specialty finishes on exposed wood: all these elements lend a new level of class to a sofa or chair. Steer away from pieces with no specialized details to be sure your piece looks hand-crafted.

Consider it an investment. With seating, you are usually going to get what you pay for. Mass market furnishings have cool styles these days, but they are not built to last and they do not offer many options for customization. You can expect the cushions and fabrics to show signs of stress in the first few years of owning the piece. Eight-way hand tie furniture manufactured in North Carolina is still the best bet. The sit is more comfortable, the construction more durable, and the detailing more impeccable. Just see our gallery of styles and you will sense the difference. Sit-test our select floor models in the store and you will know it.

Happy decorating! Be well,

Uma Stewart
